Result of Boules Championships at The Spotted Cow 1982-2010

Petanque aka Boules has been played at The Spotted cow Angmering since 1980. The game was introduced to The SpottedCow after some pub regulars encountered a match, at low tide, on the waterfront outside The Royal Oak at Langstone. The game, played by individuals or teams, of all ages and abilities, whilst enjoying a pint and some fresh air seemed ideal for a warm weekend at the local pub. Guinness were then promoting boules, selling lightweight sets of boules, in national newspapers. The opportunity was to good to miss and several people bought their first set of boules. The game was played between rows of cars in The Spotted Cow car park. The game grew in popularity and The Spotted Cow threw out a challenge to The Royal Oak, the result of that encounter is unclear, however The Royal Oak ran out of Guinness that day. The first singles championship at The Spotted Cow was held in 1982.

Brian Harden took The Spotted Cow in 1983 and in 1984 a two game piste was constructed at the pub. From then until the present boules has been played most Sunday mornings, weather permitting.

In 1985 Piat d'or promoted The Petanque British Open championship, The Spotted Cow entered a team for the qualifier at Woking Leisure Centre, the only successful game was against a team who had indulged heavily in the sponsors product. A chance meeting with a boules player from The Lamb at Bilsham lead to three teams attempting to qualify for The Pernod National Championship, Novices, 1991, only four teams entered this qualifier in Fareham, the top three going forward to the Finals at Battersea Park, London. All three teams qualified, two competed with Spotted Cow A taking the runner up position and a cheque for 300.00. The next two years Spotted Cow teams performed well in the competition, winning several qualifiers and a large number of bottles of pernod. In 1993 The finals were held in Wansford near Peterborough in wet and cold conditions with one team taking fourth place. 1997 was the last British Open Champoinship to have a novices section, once again two Spotted Cow teams qualified for the Finals in Bath with one team taking minor honours as losing semi-finalists.

In 1995 The Spotted Cow team Uncontrollable Coquille st Jaques and his merry men won the first of three consecutive victories at The Evening Standard Triples competition at Battersea Park. Other honours include wins at The East Preston Festival Boules Tournament and Champion Novices at The Crowborough Petanque club in 1995. In 2002 teams will be entering competitions in Lancing and Worthing.

In 2002 John Parry and David Sayers donated a trophy known as The Brian Harden Daisy Cup as a memorial to Brian Harden and to be presented annually to The Spotted Cow Doubles Champions.

In recent years, Ricard have been holding "The Ricard Petanque Garden Party at The Physic Gardens, Chelsea. This has been a fantastic day out, despite inclement weather. The event is a loosely organised Triples Competition for teams of all abilities. Ricard cocktails and a French theme!

Sunday morning boules remains a fixture at The Spotted Cow. There is a public, 2 lane, terrain, in East Preston. We organise a Doubles Competition for The East Preston Festival and a Bastille Day competition, sponsored by The Clockhouse Bar. This year, July 11th, the competition will be a Doubles Melee, pairing experienced and novice players

August 12th 2017 will see the annual challenge, between The Spotted Cow Angmering and The Clockhouse bar, for The Phil Bolden Memorial Trophy. This year vwill be held on The green EP
